Jairo's latest favorite discovery is The Sound of Music -- both the movie and the soundtrack. We had noticed that he has been humming "Do, a deer" for a while, so we broke out the movie to see if he'd be interested in it, and he loved it! He sat glued to the TV for the full two hours, which surprised us given that there's a lot of adult talking in the movie, and it's all in English. But he was mesmerized, and really enjoyed the music. So we got the soundtrack, and now listen to it in the car every day. He really likes "Climb Every Mountain," and has almost memorized all of "Do, a Deer," -- it is so precious to hear him singing in his sweet little voice.

Jairo's "First Words"
This is a really fun phase with Jairo, because there are so many things he's experiencing for the first time. Eric and I are having a great time watching him learn and grow, and seeing the delight on his face with each discovery. One of his latest discoveries is the English language; he is adding words to his vocabulary at an unbelievable pace, humbling us as we recall our journey to learn Spanish. We're delighted to hear his new words every day, and we're so thankful to get to experience this unique phase of life with him.
His English progression began with individual words and then phrases that he heard us say. He's now beginning to string words together to form sentences, which is so sweet to hear. You can see him searching his mind for the nouns and verbs, and then using body language and facial expressions to fill in the gaps. And it's clear that he understands much more than what he verbalizes -- my parents speak only English with him, and he seems to understand most of what they say. I'm afraid it won't be long before he is speaking English all the time. For many reasons, it would be so good for him to retain his native language, so I'm going to try to continue speaking Spanish with him, and we're looking for opportunities to bring Spanish-speakers into his life.

This chicken is delicious! (April 28, his first complete sentence. Good thing he likes my cooking -- would have been a bummer if his first sentence was, "This chicken is awful!")

"Chispy" (His attempt to say our neighbor's dog's name -- "Gypsy")

I'm hungry. (At which point he lifts up his shirt to show us his flat stomach. Conversely, when he's done eating, he lifts up his shirt and pushes out his stomach to show us how full he is.)
I am very strong.

Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day marks the official kickoff to the summer season at my parents' lakehouse, and as always, we had a wonderful weekend there! This was Jairo's first time to visit the lake, so we were all really excited to experience it through his eyes.
We figured Jairo would like the lake, but that was an understatement! He had the best time -- he couldn't get enough of the water and all the adventures and discoveries it had to offer. Eric calculated one day that Jairo had been in the water for 10 straight hours, despite his purple lips and chattering teeth! He loved looking for turtles, baby ducks and other wildlife; fishing with his Abuelito (my dad, who may have loved this even more than Jairo did); swimming and playing in the water with his cousin Emma; and riding all the various watercraft.
We've always cherished our weekends at the lake, but now, with Jairo to share the fun with us, our time there is even more memorable!

Mother's Day
How fortunate I am to be celebrating my first Mother's Day with our precious son! Every day with Jairo is a gift, but he and Eric went out of their way to make Mother's Day extra special for me.
They started the day with a delicious breakfast of eggs, sausage, biscuits and fruit, which Jairo helped Eric prepare. We then went to see an IMAX movie at the Smithsonian -- a film about the Galapagos Islands, which are part of Ecuador. It was great to see the beauty and mystery of that part of Jairo's country, and the enormous screen really brought the 3-D film to life. We're looking forward to traveling to the Galapagos with Jairo when he gets just a little older.
After the movie we came home and Eric and Jairo had gifts and cards for me. Jairo had made me a beautiful card, and had selected his own gifts, which included some soap in the shape of a baby duckling, and a stuffed dog to match his own stuffed dog (both named Lily, after our neighbor's dog, who Jairo loves). Eric once again outdid himself with an incredibly thoughtful gift -- a photo book he had made of our first 100 days together with Jairo. Needless to say, I shed a few tears with the wonderful gifts from my boys.
Later we had a picnic outside, which Eric had prepared with all my favorite goodies. And Jairo topped the meal off with cupcakes he had made for me. I'm not sure which was more fun for him -- making them or eating them!
We rounded out the day by going to my parents' house for dinner, to celebrate with my mom. It was a wonderful day, and I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to be a mother to our dear son!

Baseball
As you may have gleaned, Eric is kind of a Yankees fan, so he has been very excited to introduce Jairo to the Great American Passtime. Jairo was not familiar with baseball, so we began with Wiffle Ball to teach him the fundamentals.
He picked it up pretty quickly, and seemed to really enjoy playing. He even "made it his own" as the American Idol judges would say, by insisting on carrying the bat with him all the way around the bases, and by introducing his "overhand chop" (you may recall he first introduced this move with a bowling ball back in Ecuador).
So after some good Wiffle Ball lessons, we figured he was ready for the big leagues, and we signed him up for a county baseball team.
The first few games were pretty funny, given that the team didn't have any practices before the first game, so it was somewhat of a free-for-all out on the field.
So he and the team practiced, and started learning.
And poco a poco, they've been improving. It's great to see them learning -- the more they understand what they're doing, the more they see the positive results, the more they enjoy the game. Just as it should be!

Spring days
Spring feels so good this year -- everything seems newer, fresher, brighter than before. What a great time of year to be beginning life anew with Jairo.
We've been having a wonderful time this month, enjoying being together, and introducing Jairo to lots of new experiences. Having him here with us is also a great opportunity for Eric and me to discover all the interesting things there are to do with children in this area. After having lived here for 20+ years, we're happily surprised to realize just how many things there are that we never knew about!
